Laser Tattoo Removal Care

Pre-Treatment

Prior to your treatment sessions, your skin must be healthy. No sun exposure, tanning beds and sunless tanning cream for 4 weeks prior to treatment. All make-up, creams, or oils must be removed, as well as jewellery at or near the site. If necessary, shave the area to be treated the night before. If you have any cosmetic tattoos/permanent make-up near the area, please inform us.

Laser Tattoo Removal Care

Aftercare

Following your treatment, your technician will clean and wrap the treated area for your trip home, and explain all aftercare instructions. Typically this involves cleaning the area twice a day with warm water and a mild, unscented soap, then patting dry and applying a thin layer of Aquaphor ointment or an unscented moisturizer.

Blistering and crusting may occur, and is not uncommon. Do not rub, scratch or pick the area. Avoid UV exposure to the area for 4 weeks after treatment, and between sessions. Drink plenty of water immediately following a session.

Colours

The PicoSure can effectively target all colours, using the 755nm wavelength for darker colours like black, blue and green, and the 532nm wavelength for lighter colours like red, yellow and orange.

Skin Types

The PicoSure is safe to use on all skin types, with more conservative settings selected to minimize hyper- or hypo-pigmentation on skin types 3 to 6 on the Fitzpatrick scale.

Laser vs. Cover-Up

Why not both? A couple of treatments of laser tattoo removal may gift your tattooer with an easier job of covering an unwanted tattoo, resulting in a more beautiful piece.

Cosmetic Inks

Cosmetic inks are made differently, so lasering permanent makeup is generally not advised, as the energy oxidizes the ink, causing it to initially darken rather than lighten.

Tattoo Removal FAQs

These are some of the common questions we get asked about tattoo removal. If you don’t see the info you need, you can always call your nearest Adrenaline shop and ask one of our experts.

Does tattoo removal work?

The PicoSure is effective on all ink colours and skin types. Its picosecond technology uses a photo-mechanical pressure wave that shatters the smallest target particles, without injuring the surrounding area, and requiring less treatments than traditional nanosecond lasers.

Is the PicoSure safe for tattoo removal?

Unlike traditional nanosecond lasers that use photo-thermal technology to heat the ink particle, the PicoSure uses a more powerful pressure wave that better directs the energy into shattering the ink particles, minimizing the possibility of negative affect.

Does tattoo removal hurt?

It may. However, the procedure is very fast, much faster than applying the original tattoo. A refrigerated cooling fan will also be used to alleviate the discomfort during the treatment. The discomfort is likened to elastic band snaps.

How many tattoo removal sessions are required?

There are a number of various factors that will affect the treatment response. Age of tattoo, size, location, density of ink, quality of ink, health of the client etc. can all play important roles in how quickly clearance can be achieved. Anywhere from 3 to 12 treatments may be required.

What's the recovery time for tattoo removal?

Immediately following treatment, blistering or crusting may occur for approximately 7-14 days. You must wait 8 weeks between sessions to ensure the lymphatic system can flush out shattered ink particles effectively. If you are looking to tattoo the treated area, whether faded or removed, you must wait three months after the final treatment.

Does tattoo removal cause scarring?

With the PicoSure, incidents of scarring are very rare, and are usually the result of excessive and un-treated blistering. Some people may experience hyper-pigmentation (the darkening of skin colour) or hypo-pigmentation (the lightening of skin colour), but this is usually temporary and normal skin is typically restored once healing is complete.

How much does tattoo removal cost?

The price of laser tattoo removal in our Vancouver and Toronto studios is based on the size of the area to be treated and the number of sessions required. Consultations are FREE of cost and your technician will offer packages based on the anticipated number of treatments.
